you need to round off first the numbers to the highest place value
1,420 is rounded off to the nearest thousands = 1,000
5,791 is rounded off to the nearest thousands = 6,000
add them, you get the estimted sum of 7, 000
to round off, look the the place value being rounded off, then look to the right of that number. if the number is 0 to 4, you round down. meaning that nothing will change to the place value being rounded off, copy it and then add the zeros. if the number to the right is 5 to 9, then round up. meaning you add one to the place value being rounded off and then add the zeros :)
