Yeah, Space Man's got ya covered up above.

I just wrote this somewhere else, so I figured I'd paste in in here and add my 2 cents.

I used to install AVG on all of my customer's machines for over a year and started having problems with slow updates and not only that, bugs were starting to get past it.

So I searched for a replacement. I couldn't find any decent reviews that I trusted, so I conducted my own test.

I took a machine and went to every bad idea I could think of. Once my machine locked up with bugs, I copied the hard drive 4 times and installed bitdefender, antivir, avg, and avast on each partition and saw how well they did.

bitdefender was the best, but the free scanner, did not do real time scanning (fine for me, but bad for my customers), so I choose #2 Antivir which was really close to #1 and easy to setup. AVG came in farther down at #3 and avast was last.

An interesting side note to the story was that I recopied 2 of the partitions to their buggy state and ran a trial of Norton and McGafee on them and 3 out of 4 of the free scanners beat them with 1/4 of the overhead.

I did this almost 6 months ago, so things may have changed, but I'm sticking with antivir at http://free-av.com for AntiVirus

I always give people my 5 minute security speech which isn't everything, but it's a start.

1. You need to get all the windows updates.

2. Get a firewall like zonealarm or sunbelt kerio

3. get adaware and spybot antispyware scanners

4. get a good antivirus program (I like AntiVir)

5. and don't trust things on the internet
(except maybe http://www.download.com :)

Norton is well known and respected. You speak of making one of several your primary protection -- you need to be careful here -- you don't want too much of a good thing. You don't want one protection fighting the other.

For myself, I stick to Yahoo Mail (which pre-scans attachments), Norton Antivirus, WindowsXP firewall - and am careful where I go and what I open.

You shouldn't take chances. There are too many nuts with too much time on their hands who get their jollies messing things up for those of us who use and respect the computer and what it can do.

AVG
It's Free and the best overall anti-virus.

I also recommend the following anti-spyware / adware and firewall protection.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

SpySweeper is not an anti-virus. It is an anti-spyware app. Since a properly secured computer needs BOTH an anti-virus and an anti-spyware, I would suggest you go with Trend anti-virus and SpySweeper.

Norton is heavy on resource usage.

hi, Trend Microvirus is better, i think.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:
