It sounds like an electrical problem in the gauge circuit. Have a mechanic connect a mechanical gauge to it and test the oil pressure that way.

If it's still bouncing around, it's probably a sticking check valve in the oil pump's outlet. You're going to have to drop the oil pan to get at that in all likelihood.

With that many miles you've probably experience wear in the main bearings causing a slight leak in oil pressure, or the oil pump itself is beginning to fail! Drop the oil pan, make sure you have the torque specs handy for the main caps, drop one at the front, rear, and middle of the crankshaft. If you notice a copper color on the main bearings you have found your oil pressure loss, if you have caught it early enough you may be able to replace the main bearings from the underneath side of the engine and not have to worry about the crank, don't wait until knocking is heard, diagnose and fix if this a vehicle you rely on!

300k miles is a lot on a 351w engine. i would suspect that it is tired and getting old. get some one to perform an oil pressure test then go from there. when my truck started to do that the rod and main berrings went out about 10k after. not to say yours will but it is a posiability. check and make shure that you are useing the right oil weight that could have something to do with it. also your oil pump could be going out

If you have 300,000 miles on a ford thank god that is your only problem. You should write to ford and tell them your story they might replace your engine for free and take your old one and figure out what they did right and then fix it so it will blow up after 125000 like all the other engines they ever made.

I'm gonna guess that the 300,000 miles have something to do with it.
