The carbon atoms fit very closely together. The closer the atoms, the harder the substance.

The crystalline structure gives diamonds their hardness I believe . one sec checking in wikipedia.
Yep I was right diamonds are hard because each carbon atom in a diamond is bonded to 4 other carbon atom but look in, http://physicsweb.org/articles/news/9/8/16/1?rss=2.0 , for the article . Oh for the folk out there like me the article is about a new substance that is harder than diamond.
