I know this is the old optimism/pessimism trick, but here's the thing:

it depends how the water in the glass got that way.

If I have a full glass of water, and do something to eliminate half of the water, then I call that "half empty" because it was full but half was emptied. It is now half-empty.

If I start off with an empty glass and fill it half-way with water, the glass is only half-way to being full. Therefore, I call it "half-full."

Makes sense, doesn't it?

Half-way full because I always think in terms of how much a glass is holding, not how much it is lacking in content. Glasses are made to hold things, so it's more natural for me to think that it is half way filled (holding) something.

I don't know if it has anything to do with my optimism... although I do tend to be more optimistic than pessimistic if I had to describe myself.

Half full AND half empty, for it can not be one without being the other.

you contaminate the mind when you give the possible answers b/c then the subject then must think about which one he/she thinks. you will never get an accurate answer that way. say "the glass is half ____" (let the person fill in the blank b/c then they can say what first comes to mind without you giving limitations before they have a chance to decide for themself.)

The glass is neither empty nor full... it is a dream-state of indecisiveness... water cannot just float in the middle.
