It IS a compliment because when people say you're cute, that's a compliment. But when they say "cute as a button," then that means very cute because tiny things are usually cute. ♥

yes, it IS supposed to be a complement. But there are lots of things cuter than buttons....like
a puppy. But I think that someone thought it would come off as an insult to be compared to a dog, so they said button. It was probily a spur of the moment, random thing, and it has stuck to this day.

yes its a compliment if your 8 years old or a puppy but if a guy says that to you, then hes complimenting you like he would his lil sister, he most likely wouldnt date you.

But I'm with you - buttons don't qualify as 'cute'.
