Hi there,
Tell you´re friend to google Costa Rica real estate, and research the first pages. To see examples of properties I recommend
http://www.propertiesincostarica.com/
To get other kind of information about real estate in Costa Rica I recommend this forum
http://www.american-european.net/living_costa_rica/index.php
For the information he wants about how is the life in Costa Rica I recommend this website where you can find pretty much all the answers to possible questions about living in costa rica, cost of living, etc.
http://www.costarica.com
Also tell you´re friend I would use real estate websites as a reference to check out information, but not to buy a property or rent something only by what you can see on the website, or to a company that has a nice website. He should be ware of scams which unfortunately happen a lot, specially over the internet.

I lived in Costa Rica for over 10 years and I can tell you it is AWESOME. Everything is very relaxed, the weather is awesome, the food is great, and there are a lot of cool places to visit, like mountains and forests, volcanoes, places where they sell artesanias, beaches, restaurants, the such.
The only thing I didn't like was earthquake season... so yeah, heh.
Like one poster said,
Pura vida, mae! La vida en Costa Rica es bien tuanis. Disfruta!
