this has been happening often, what does it mean? I have the optical mouse, is it a "light thing"?

Wow thats very weird. I have heard of mouse moving on its own when its just not functioning correctly, but when your settings automatically change like that, then I would be a bit suspicious.

You might want to check your task manager to see if there is anything weird running in the background.

Right click on your task bar and bring up your task manager. Go to processes and check to see if there is anything weird running in the background. You might want to go to START, then RUN, and type msconfig and see if there is any weird program in your startup tab or your services tab and disable them.

Then just reboot.

You might want to test this theory again by putting in a different mouse and see if it happens again.

Several things can lead to that.
1. A Virus.
if u lack a good antivirus, immediately get ur hands on one and scan ur pc. Chances are you already have a good antivirus, so it is not a virus which is causing this.
2.If you are using an Optical mouse and the plane is tilted [not horizontal] causing the mouse o slip a little every constant interval. Leading to self induced movement of cursor!
3. Check the tension of the Mouse Wire! If the mouse wire is tense then due to the tension the mouse slips a little bit every time giving the impression that the cursor moving on its own! Make sure that the mouse wire is well relaxed.

Don't worry its a general problem with optical mouse. I have not heard of a virus yet which moves mouse :) Anyways if its doing something sensible then you got to check as shomeone might be remotely accessing your PC ! :D But mostly its just a simple mouse problem and you are safe :) If you are really affraid of the mouse buy a good mouse pad! Thats it :)

What kind of surface are you using it on? A shiney one? If it is, then the light could be bouncing around moving the cursor. If the little plastic on the bottom is all scratched up, then the light could be reflecting it self back to the little sensor. If the mouse, is wirless, then there may be interference. If the mouse is on an unbalanced surface, then, the mouse may be moving.

Has it just been moving a little or a lot, like trying to click on icons and open files?

If it's just a little maybe your bumping the mouse, but if it's moving on it's own like someone else is moving it you should make sure to run a virus scan and double check that your Windows firewall is enabled as it could be someone trying to take control of your system by way of a trojan.

Yes, it could be your mouse pad that is causing the problem. If your mouse pad is reflective at all, it can make the cursor rapidly jump all over the place. The only way around it that I have found is to use a dull foam mouse pad. Good luck!
