I work at a Petsmart and my sisters both got a guinea pig from my store when we first opened. The Canadian price for a guinea pig at Petsmart is about $20 I believe.

Guinea pigs are social so make sure to get a pair, and the larger the cage the better. They do get quite a bit bigger than the babies you'll probably see for sale. Guinea pigs are usually very skittish at first, but with regular, patient handeling and practice they can become very nice animals.

One of my sister's is only 6 but the guinea pig loves her. He'll also make little noises when my mum comes into the room and will beg for treats. The cage will probably cost you about $60 at least, but sometimes they come as starter kits and will have everything you need to, well, start, lol. I would also recommend buying two types of foods for it at a time, because if they're not introduced to several foods they can become very picky and only eat one for the rest of their lives. If that one were to stop being produced or sold near you, an old guinea pig will sometimes even starve itself to death.

A quick list of stuff you'll need and approx. prices (based on what I can remember from working tonight- Canadian prices)
-Cage $60-80
-Water bottle $4
-Food bowl $4
-Bedding $7 (I'd use Carefresh or Aspen)
-Food (two types) $14
-Chew toys $6-15
-Home/House/Hiding place $10
-Vitamins $5

Remember than guinea pigs, like humans and some types of bats, cannot make their own vitamin C so they'll need supplements. You can either buy these in the form of foods/treats or vitamins for their water. Also give them fresh fruits and vegetables often such as orange slices/quarters, kiwi, and carrots. If you give them vitamins in their water, make sure to change it everyday otherwise they become less potent.

That's all I can think of right now :) Good luck and congrats on your possible new pet.

Hi! Of course you can buy a guinea pig from any place! You should just give him/her an examination. That is what counts, its not about where you buy them, you just need to give them an examination. First off, look at their habitat. Is there enough food to feed all the guinea pigs in that cage and enough water? Is the cage clean, it doesn't need to be spotless, but don't buy from a place with very dirty conditions. If it looks like its been cleaned in the last day or two you should be fine. Check to see if there is hay, and look at the guinea pigs behavior as well. Now ask to hold the guinea pigs. ANY store that will not let you hold the guinea pigs is not a good store, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM! If they let you hold a guinea pig look at its eyes for discharge. Look at its ears and make sure they are clean, and look at the feet to see if there is anything stuck to them, or in them and look at their nails. They do need them clipped every two months or so. Ok, now gently look at their fur and see that its not all ratted and matted. Pet him a little to see how he responds. Then feel around his body and make sure there are now lumps or any abnormal things you feel. Now if you can, I wasn't able to, Look at the guinea pigs area and check for impaction. Its where their potty gets a clogged up in there and they can't go. :( After this examination you should know who's healthy and who's not, and remember you have options. I didn't get to look at any of the other guinea pigs, and they talked me into buying a bunch of stuff I had already bought, and just to let you know I had my expirence at Petland. I love Petsmart its amazing and they have great employees. We don't have a petco here so I don't know about them. Oh and if you choose a female, you may want to look up pregnancy and ask if the males are in the same cage like they were at petland. You don't want to get a pregnant guinea pig. I hope this helps. Much luck! If you need a checklist of stuff you need or if you have any questions, email me. I check my email often. Good Luck! Jade

I work at a PetSmart in Virginia Beach, and our guinea pigs go for $29.99. That list of supplies from one of the above responders is excellent, but might I suggest you go to www.cavycages.com and learn how to make your own easy, cheap, and roomier cage than the ones you might find in pet stores. In fact, the $60 cage you may buy at PetSmart is not really going to be big enough for a piggie to get the exercise it needs, and certainly not large enough for two. Plus, it's cheaper to make your own, and they can be pretty professional looking! Good luck =)

Try looking at your local shelters. There are many homeless guinea pigs looking for a forever home. Don't promote the reckless cycle of breeding! Often, guinea pigs sold in stores are sold sick and infested with parasites.

You can build yourself a huge cage, which is larger and less expensive than anything you can buy in a store.

Guinea pigs require vitamin C in their diet, but do no suppliment this by adding vitamins to their water. They need to have fresh veggies daily (aprox. 1 cup per pig). If you give them foods high in vitamin C, there is really no need to buy extra vitamins.

Also, guinea pigs do like to chew, but my pigs have never ever chewed on those wood blocks you buy in the store. For an easy and cheap alternative, you can give them carboard tubes. If you stuff them with hay, it makes a fun treat! Speaking of hay, guinea pigs require hay on a daily basis. If your pig is under 1 year old, feed alfalfa. If your pig is over 1 year, limit the alfalfa and feed a grass hay like timothy or orchard grass.

NO! Do not do it. Do not buy Guinea Pigs, I pay $100 for my Guinea Pigs at Petsmart (this included everything down to the cage, food, you name it). I ended up giving my two female guinea pigs away because I had three cats who wanted to eat them, that and my brother and I had hard time becoming attached to them because they do not like to be held. Really consider what you are getting into before you make that mistake.
