Most studfinders are magnetic, and look for "ferrous material," which means anything with iron in it. They tend to look for steel nails, which are mostly made of iron. If you've got steel metal studs, a regular studfinder should light up like a pinball machine. Can it find it? Heck yeah. If your home happens to have aluminum studs... well, you might want to call the psychologists to check out your contractor, because that would be way more expensive. but even aluminum bars might have enough iron mixed in to get noticed.

The older model studfinders couldn't. Most new models can find wood studs, metal studs, pipes, and electrical wireing. The studfinder is most likely is marked with settings for different tasks. Hope this helps.

a studfinder will go crazy with metal studs, studfinders are metal detectors looking for the nail in the studs, did you really think that a small cheap devise that sells for 15 bucks will be so miraculous that it detects wood behind a finished wall?

yes

the electronic ones generally sense the change in wall density, so it will indicate when a stud is detected whether metal or wood

even the cheap magnetic stud finders should
be able to detect metal studs, even tho they are
normally used to find wooden studs by the nails
