Yep, it's some kind of fungus. Not quite a mushroom, but pretty similar. Spores of it land on the plants, and start sucking out the nutrients and such. More common on lawns that have just been fertilized. You can carefully remove them to avoid spreading more spores, but that's not 100% effective, and it's pretty gross.
They grow best in dark and damp condtions, I bet you've been watering your lawn at night. If so, switch the timers so they come on right around the morning. That should discourage the stuff without too much effort on your part. You might even water a bit less. Perhaps one or two brownish spots is not the end of the world.
Did you just fertilize too? yup. Try a little bit less next time, or wait a while... like forever. My dad never fertilizes the lawn.

They are puffball fungus similar to mushrooms. NOT ALL puffballs are edible as some other fool said so dont go eating them. And they reproduce by releasing millions of spores from within the mushroom so kicking them as another person suggests as fun just sends spores everywhere and assures they will be back next season. They are not really a problem of any kind. If you dont like em pluck them up and throw em away.

I recently had this sort of problem and after poking and moving it around with a garden tool, it poofed a puff of powder out and realized it was a form of a mushroom. Remember, if your not sure, don't touch with your hands? I found out that the powder in those mushrooms could cause upper respitory problems, go figure!

It's some kind of fungus. I know because we have the same kind of thing in our yard, too. I wouldn't kick them, though. Because they break up into this weird powder that gets all over everything...
