I can certainly relate as my husband is from South Carolina and he uses all kinds of slang. Thankfully, I have learned to understand him. LOL

Southerner's speak correctly.....I'm a Southerner living in Vermont. Many words I use or not the same as they use. But..I would not change my dialect for nothing!!
Not sure what slang you are using...Is it the actual words..or the way you say them...The southern dialect, in itself, is not slang, to a Southerner. It may sound that way to others, but keep in mind...They may sound slangy to you also. If your speaking 'cleanly' and 'respectfully' I wouldn't worry about changing the dialect. I'm rather proud of my 'Southern Dialect'...
I work in Customer Service, and many customers have complemented me on my 'dialect'. It's one of the things that make me 'special'..
I must add this...Who decides what is 'proper english'...And why do we allow them to 'call the shots?' (wink)

I can relate. Try slowing down when you talk and pronounciate each word. Also practice hard words like ask, asset, accent, cuboard, and things with the long voul sounds which are really hard to pronounce with southern dialect.

Okay y'all I've lived in Texas for 34 years. My parents took us back up north for a visit after we had been down here only a year. all my friends said I talked funny. This southern/Texan way of talking is just contagious, it just grabs a hold of you and you find yourself helplessly saying things like "fixin", "purty", and "far" (fire with one syllable), "one taco short of a combo plate", and so many others. The only way to save yourself form this diction disease is to live in a bubble!!!

If you speak like you are from Texas, then you don't need help.
