If you like name several poems.

I am curious which poets of this generation are likely to stand along side, say, Robert Lowell and Sylvia Plath from the last.

The first anthology, Six American Poets (ed. Joel Connaroe) included Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes.

It's hard to narrow down to six, but if I absolutely had to pick six living authors who are currently writing (as opposed to folks who are really part of a previous generation), I'd include the following poets with representative poems:

Rita Dove, "Daystar," "After Reading Mickey...," and "Parsley."

Li-Young Lee, "Persimmons," "This Room and Everything In It," and "The Gift."

Billy Collins, "Forgetfulness," "Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes," and "Marginalia."

Sandra Cisneros, "His Story," "Loose Woman," and "You Bring Out the Mexican in Me."

Yusef Komunyakaa, "Thanks," "Facing It," and "Slam, Dunk, and Hook."

Sharon Olds, "The Elder Sister," "The Glass," and "Good Will."

I would have to include myself. You can check out three of my poems on my 360.
Hope to see you there!
