It was a bunch of guys, some of them kids. They had not yet acquired explosives, hand't even booked flights, were "preparing" for a dry run, AND they had been infiltrated by an informant.

So was it really necessary for the Department of Homeland Insanity to prevent people in the U.S. from taking toothpaste onboard flights today?

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." -- Benjamin Franklin

Everyone who has replied here in favor of a ban on liquids so far are a bunch of cowards. This ban on liquids is idiotic and further proof that we as a nation are afraid of our own shadows and would rather depend on Big Brother Bush to save us from our paranoia than to act like responsible adult human beings.

It's pathetic.

Did the Office of Homeland Security know exactly that they were all caught and who is to say that is toothpaste in the container.
I feel that for safety reasons no one should be allowed to carry any thing on the plan every thing should go in your baggage just so it makes it that much harder to hurt America.

You sound like the kind of person that feels we do not need the Homeland Security and feel they over react.

But you are the same guy if attacked would be yelling were is the police and what the heck is Homeland Security why didn't they stop this attack.

You say they were just kids of coarse they are how many grown audits do you think they can convince to blow them self up for some fanatics but you feel they over reacted maybe they should have waited until maybe something happens to the informant and we miss the chance to stop it. Then What?

It is better to on the side of safety

For your sake we have to put America First

yes u fkn idiot. those 'kids' knew what they were doing, the brits had been keeping up on this for 6 mos at least so it was planned long ago, and if u had listened to the news they had explosive gel. the 'dry run' was taking things like toothpaste containers etc on a plane flight so within a coupla days of this incident they were gonna fly to the us and see how easy it was to do that. after that it was the real thing. and just be glad they were infiltrated; remember the cia was infiltrated by the soviets, and the us govt was infiltrated by an informant of usama bin laden. watch national geographic channel on aug 28th

In my opinion, yes, but it is all about letting the public feel "something is being done" and creating the image of a secure and efficient government. Hmmm. If that were the case, 9/11 would have been prevented. Notice it was the British anyway who stopped this attempt. If 9/11 had been attempted there, would it have happened?

After 9/11 any security precautions are welcomed in my opinion, and these are much more reasonable than the ones imposed shortly after 9/11. Is it really so much to ask to leave your hair gel, toothpaste and lotion in your checked baggage? I'd rather do that than risk getting blown up over the Atlantic, or flown into a skyscraper... I don't know... Maybe that's just me... Crazy personal preference, I know.

Wow, They were only in the dry run phase so everything is okay. I don't know what to say. Isn't it possible they weren't the only ones with the idea to smuggle stuff in through toothpaste? Isn't it also possible that not everyone in that particular operation was caught?

No, Im pretty sure it wasnt necessary, but it provided the curent administration with the fear factor it was looking for. The more severe and asanine the response, the more our feeble minded citizens ooh and aah at how serious and on top of it our leadership is. Its all a ruse. I have begun to doubt the severity of this incident, but as usual, most americans need the "threat of death by terrorism" to pull them away from their american idol and realworld.

If some planes HAD been blown up, I doubt you'd be going around saying this same thing.

Most people will tolerate the inconvenience to protect their safety. Although on the news, there was this one lady complaining about having to throw away her makeup. Boo hoo.

And is the US over-reacting? No way, the UK airport security is even more strict than ours. People should stop whining.

of course the u.s. overreacted. that's what the u.s. does best. remember 9/11? we overreacted so much we invaded the wrong country!
the homeland security agency is so inept at their job that when something like this plot is uncovered they go all out to make it look like they know what they're doing.
the air marshall system is pathetic. they're actually discouraged and reprimanded for turning in negative reports that show problems within the hsa system. they're only supposed to report what's going right. that makes me feel sooooo safe.
