Are multi-instrumentialists hard to find, or are they pretty common?

no too rare... I play many different instruments and most of the musicians that I hang out with play multiple instruments also.
I think it's mostly because we have short attention spans. We get bored easily so we pick up other instruments.

It's not uncommon at all. However, they will be more inclined to a specific type of intument. The one they play the most, the one they like the sound of the most. When I went to a Santana concert, there was this amazing opening band called Robert Randolf and the family band, and they did a lot of switching of the instuments. It gave their style of music a lot of versatility. The piano is an instument that many parents first introduce to their children and then they move on to the guitar or drums or whatever else they like. I know many people who can play the piano along with other instruments.

My husband is multi-talented on several instruments, which is not so rare from what I understand. What IS rare, is that he is both artistically creative and technologically profound. He plays instruments, does graphic design and photography, and is also a computer, networking, and programming geek. Surprisingly, he is also physically active, very social, and a great father. Did I mention he does all the laundry around here too?

Well there are different kinds of musicians, I myself am just a basic trained musician but I can sight read very well, if you put something in front of me I can play it but just on one instrument. My boyfriend on the other hand plays by figuring it out himself, he plays with his heart. He started out on drums when he was very young and is talented, he picked up the guitar a few years after that. He can normally just pick up an instrument and after messing around a little bit has figured out the workings of it. He does seem to play all instruments in a percussion sort of way, go figure...

I consider myself musicially inclined, and I can play several instruments (electric guitar, bass, drums, piano, keyboard, sax, clarinet, and violin). It's hard to tell whether there are many gifted multi-instrumentialist musicians, unless you know a lot personally, because they usually stick to one instrument while playing gigs.

Most musicians are multi-talented. I have a friend who can play wind instruments, string instruments, the piano, the organ, sings, and can write music, too. Amazing -- I can't even read music!

Actually it's pretty common, also common to be just "so so" when you spread yourself out like that. What's RARE is when you find someone who plays many instruments and is a virtuoso at each one!

I tried guitar , but was very unsuccessful, because the scale was totally opposite from piano, which I had already learned. I couldn't break the habit of wanting to play the scale I was familiar with!duh...

It's not too rare when you hang out with musicians all the time. There are plenty of people that can play more than one instrument, but they usually prefer one over them all.

Like all disciplines, once you master one, the others seem to come pretty easily, like languages, mathematics, and music. Not common, but definitely reasonable to expect that many folks will be able to do it.

Peace.
