What would you like to see more of in "Gay TV"? Would you want the stereotypes (Will and Grace) or the more serious work (Queer as Folk or Six Feet Under)? What would you want to be seen or want to see? (Any rantings about how gays can't be in TV will be ignored or reported)

To each his own, but I think that gays need to be portrayed in a more normal way. Too much of TV gives into the stereotypes that surround the gay community and it'd be nice if there were a show that could portray a gay person as a "normal" person. Not that anything is normal these days but obviously most of the gay community are not what you would call a "flamer" and I think that when characters like Jack on Will and Grace are put out there to the public as a "gay man" then the public thinks all gay men are like that when that is in fact far from the truth.

I haven't seen or heard of "workout", but I HATE Queer Eye (and I'm so far the only gay person I've met who feels this way). As far as media representation, it set us years backwards. When Will and Grace first came out, it was a major step forward because it had stereotypical Jack set next to Normal-guy Will. As the show progressed, Jack got more outrageous, and Will got a little more stereotypical, but it was still a good thing overall. I think if there's just MORE representation, then there's more of a chance to portray the type of diversity that actually exists in the community. (Queer as Folk was "more serious"??? They all go clubbing every night, drink and get into the drug scene, much with the promiscuous sex, and oh yeah they're ALL WHITE)

I watched about half of one Will and Grace episode. Between the laugh track (I can't stand those) and the stereotypes it just was not my thing. I did very much enjoy Queer as Folk. Never saw 6 feet under.
One of my favorite gay characters was the guy who worked in the office on NYPD Blue. I'd like to see more gay characters on TV where the fact that they are gay isn't a big deal - isn't the focus of the show or of their character. They are just treated matter of factly like the other characters.

Better writing and acting. I watch a lot of movies of every genre. My standards are high, whether the story is about homos or straights.

I stopped going to the gay (hardly any lesbian films, so that's why I just say gay) film festival Outfest in Los Angeles many years ago because the movies were all so bad.

Shows like QAF and L Word aren't anything like reality. Those groups of people wouldn't be hanging out together in real life. For example, a type-A sophisticate like Jennifer Beales' character wouldn't be hanging with a skanky slacker like Shane.

For drama, would be nice to see something more real, where the drama is about something other than being homo, yet homo life influences the drama. Sort of like the Sopranos, which shows a guy providing for his family via organized crime and greatly influenced by his Italian-American heritage, with characters that are believable. Capice?

For comedy, would be nice if there were a famous gay/lesbian comedian that a show could be built around ala Lucy or Seinfeld or Cosby or Roseanne. Oh wait, there was one... Ellen. I'm sure there will be another. But, this is more tricky than drama since exceptional talent like Lucy or Seinfeld or Cosby or Roseanne or Ellen is very rare and can't be manufactured by anyone other than the comedian herself/himself.

Personally as a gay man I felt that will and grace sucked..it gave the straight audience the stereotypical gay man to laugh at...Queer as folk..yeah I really enjoyed that....But generally gay or straight I'd just like to watch good TV (is that an oxymoron?).

I loved Will & Grace because it showed both sides of the Gay man. You had Jack, the flamboyant one and Will the straight looking straight acting one. I watched the L Word several times and the characters were really good but the storylines weren't. Do I want to watch television that only has gays and lesbians on the programs? No, that is not real life. But shows that have them on, are alright with me. This is a really good question. It makes you think before you answer.

I dont' guess I've really ever thought about it. I prefer the more comedical type shows so I guess the Will and Grace type. But as for the stereotypes, I could careless if the gay person is a stereotypical gay or a big lumberjack, lol.

I'd like to see more gay characters, and gay storylines in mainstream TV shows. Six Feet Under was a good example.

I like them all... Part of the reason is because there is not a show that gives you a "real" life scenario... you know going to work, paying the bills, etc. So we have to watch all of them to get a glimpse here and there. The other part of the reason is "Any publicity is Good publicity"...as long as we have a TV presence, our causes stay in the mainstream...Thanks for the great question...
