id prefer to let my parents stay where they are at. my father is a contractor for building houses and my mother is happy at home enjoying her retirement. the way they lived their lives, i wouldnt take that away from them.

Both my parents are retired for one My Mom was a sec'y - bookkeeper , my dad is legally blind but that didn't stop him from working from the time he was 14 (I'm not so sure what he did at that age but ) he retired from the auto business , If I could have chose their profession my Mom would have been a caterer she loves doing that and had my Dad's eyesight been good he would have loved being a race car driver (no kidding) and just for the record if I had the means to restart my career I would have been a Marine Biologist

Why does out parent's professions matter?
Are you looking from a 'I want them to spend more time at home' perspective or a 'I want them to make more money' perspective...
Maybe I'm too old and I just don't care about that. My dad owns his own business; it's a small computer networking company and my mom does payroll, etc... she only works a maximum of 20 hours a week.
However, they make plenty of money... except for the lack of a pension or retirement plan for my parents... so they save a lot...
again, why does this matter?

My mom worked at a school with special needs children and as a secretary later on while my dad was a pipe-fitter (in construction). Now they are both retired and that's what I'd have them be ALWAYS if I had a choice! :) I LOVE them being able to travel and enjoy life and visit their kids! :)

i would make my dad a famous & rich actor and my mom a famous, successful fashion desinger who designs gorgeous clothes. you don't need to know what my parents do now.
