It's derived from an old brain teaser... 9 dots in a 3 X 3 grid... can you draw a line through all of them without lifting the pen from the paper and using only three straight lines? The only way to do it is to "think outside the box", i.e. one of the lines must extend outside the grid of dots to make it work. Nowadays it has become a metaphor for any creative thinking which is not constrained by social norms.
