there are protocols set up for the transfer of information... http... means HyperText Transer Protocol... or you can do FTP... File Transfer Protocol...

there are many mainframe computers as the backbone of the internet... like Cray, Sun, IBM, DEC, etc... each uses its own operating system...

just like you can access the internet with an IBM or APPLE computer... or Sun.. or etc... using software that gives you the right protocols (http) to browse.
