I like "Cozy Crochet" which has a couple of very good patterns, and the one in particular I like is for a thick four strand yarn blanket which can also be made into a quick, thick scarf. A single stranded version would be more elegant, and can be just as warm with the right kind of fiber. This book is available at my library. I also have a book called "Vogue Knitting Crocheted scarves" which is very nice and has inspired me alot, particularly the granny square shawl. And finally I'd recommend you look at Interweave knits website linked below. They are my favorite source for knits and I am pretty sure their crochet patterns are darn good, too.

I have found that in some of the department stores
that sell yarn, near the sewing pattern areas to they
will have some free patterns. You can even find some
at the thift shop for a reasonable price or even go to
the library and check a crochet book that will have
some scarf patterns. Enjoy your christmas project.
