I would be honest about it, but choose and experience where you came out a better, stronger, wiser person or whatever. For example, did you have to put yourself through college? Did you go through a divorce? Have you had to face a tragedy? I wouldn't lie about it, but I wouldn't tell them something that might think I am a psychotic weirdo either. Whatever you do, don't mention any phobias, mental issues or fetishes!

I've been asked this question many times! Truly, I have no 'toughest' situation that I remembered or can't handle. I'm a Manager and in Customer Service. Product defects are easy, by offering a replacement, with apologies. If need to, a little extra on top of the product. The tough situations are usually staff and customer related, human situations. To settle these, it's usually about attentive listening, empathy and offering alternatives/ solutions to the situations.

if its for a business or job interview, don't pick something that give away too much personal info. that could be damaging. pick something business related like a small business crisis that you helped solve. what they are looking for is how you reacted to the unforseen situation

i agree with the first answer. even if you have to b.s. the whole answer (ok don't make it sound TOO unrealistic!), make sure you say at the end how much better of a person you are because of it and what you learned from it.
