Not too good in Science, but from what I understand, the best way to date something in terms of age, is to use carbon dating. Its a method that works really well for fossils and such. Look it up on the Internet, you may be able to find out more about it.

Carbon is the primary molecule in dealing with organic chemistry. Carbon makes up molecules like carbohydrates and such, literally serving as a backbone for the molecules as well: almost every atom is bonded to a carbon in some way.

Organic Chemistry is the chemistry of the compounds of carbon. These compounds are central to life in this planet. Carbon compounds include DNA, the giant molecules that contain all of our genetic information. Carbon unlike any other element posses the ability to form 4 stable bonds which is called tetra valence, this is the real reason as of why life depends from it, for oxygen is divalent and hydrogen monovalent: not enough bonds.

Carbon is unique amongst the elements because it can form stable substances from small molecules to very long chain polymers. These stable substances can contain other elements (O,N,S,P etc) and carbon arrangement which give rise to functionality.
Carbon chains are slow or nearly inert to oxidation.Other chain forming elements are very susceptible to oxidation (Si, S, P etc) and degrade in an oxygen rich atmosphere.
Because of its stability and ability to create multifunctional molecules, carbon is the only element that can produce the complex chemistries needed to support organic life on an oxygen rich world.

Carbon has 4 available bonding sites, this means it can bond with more types of molecules and form the most stable compounds with multiple types of bonds. This ability for diversity is one of the major reasons carbon is in organic compounds

Simply put, carbon along with oxygen(carbon dioxide) is what makes up the air we breath and every living thing needs air.
