We are suing someone for damages done on a contracted job.

It depends on a lot of things, including the number of parties involved and the jurisdiction of the suit. The more complex, the longer it takes. My experience is that 2-3 years is about the normal length of time.

I was involved with a civil suit that resulted in a jury trial then went to the appellate courts then to the supreme court. In all it was about 7-8 years.

I think it depends on the your attorneys, the case, the liabilities, witnesses, etc.
