it was a UN decision after WWII. Europe had a history of just trying to eradicate the Jewish people where ever they were... there were the pogroms of Russia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which caused a lot of Jews to emigrate from over there over here, and where ever else they could make a home.. and after the hideous Holocaust where MILLIONS of folks, Jews, Gypsies, Blacks,Protestants and whoever else hitler didn't like got incenerated, turned into lampshades(human skin was used), pillow casings(human hair was used), it was decided that Jewish people needed a home of their own, and since the Torah provided a fairly accurate historical record of where the Jewish people came from before they hit Europe, the area known as Israel, (which was mostly desert...) was chosen for the homeland for the Jewish people.
It wasn't the US alone, all the member nations of the UN voted on it and ratified it and recognized Israel as a state when it was founded in 1949.

After the Holocaust and WWII, the United States along with a lot of other countries agreed that Jews needed a country of their own, a sanctuary from all the anti-Semitism that nearly wiped them off the planet. Besides, they had a legitimate historical claim to the Holy Land (although Muslims too have a legitimate claim to that land).

"...While President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared to be sympathetic to the Jewish cause, his assurances to the Arabs that the United States would not intervene without consulting both parties caused public uncertainty about his position. When President Harry S. Truman took office, he made clear that his sympathies were with the Jews and accepted the Balfour Declaration, explaining that it was in keeping with former President Woodrow Wilson's principle of "self determination." Truman initiated several studies of the Palestine situation that supported his belief that, as a result of the Holocaust, Jews were oppressed and also in need of a homeland. "

It's quite a bit more complicated, but the US position was largely due to Truman's support.

And to the first responder, I am sorry to inform you that 1948 was, in fact, after 1776

So the Jews would have a home country to call their own.Over the years almost everyone has hated jews enough to try and kill them, mostly for no reason.During World War 2 the Germans murdered over 6,000,000 jews for no reason at all.I think we should keep helping them in any way that we can. And to those people that claim the Israelis and the Muslims have been at war for 2,000 years I would like to ask.How could they have been at war when the Muslims didn't even exist anywhere near that long ago. That is a mistake made by the newsies that has been repeated way to many times.

Because the presidential election is always heavily influenced by the jewish vote and jewish money ("one nation under god" doesn't really apply in this case).
At the time in the 1940s the jewish illegal immigrants from Europe had formed terrorist gangs to fight the British adminstering power in Palestine and the US supported them with weapons and money because they were jealous of British influence in the Middle East.
After all the death and destruction of the atrocities carried out by these gangs the UN security council voted for the partition of Palestine.
This was not accepted by the indigenous population made up mainly of christian and muslim arabs who have been refugees from their own land ever since.
The reason for all this killing is purely religious based on ancient jewish writings.
It's as if the native american tribes reclaimed the lands of their ancestors and carried out ethnic cleansing in Chicago etc.
Can you imagine?
I don't think they would get much support from the White House.
