Kepler improved on the design of the telescope by replacing the negative eye lens that was initially used with a positive eye lens. This provides superior eye relief and a wider field of view. This arrangement inverts the image, but that is not a concern for astronomical use. This type of telescope was known as a Keplerian telescope and, with considerable improvements, is the basis for modern refractor designs. The older design is called a Galilean telescope, though Galileo was not actually its inventor.
