the best thing you can do if you are ever in a falling elevator is to lie down to maximise your area in contact with the floor of the elevator. If it was free falling it would not help, but the cable from an elevator coils up like a spring underneath as it falls and brings the elevator to a slower halt, also there is a cushoin of air that gets trapped underneath that helps to slow the descent.

Here's the cool thing, one, take out a Pendulum, becuase it will stop it its tracks wherever it is! In free fall, the period of a pendalum becomes zero. Secondly you could let light in from a side, and the light will curve downwards! Only by like.... a fraction of a fraction.
