My mom is deathly afraid of snakes, and she uses a product called Snake Away. It's a powder that she sprinkles around her property line and her gardens. It must work, because I haven't seen a snake of any kind in her yard for a long time. (I did suggest to her that if she put it all the way around the yard, that any snakes in the yard prior to the Snake Away application would then be trapped in the yard. For some reason, she didn't find this amusing at all.) But seriously, it comes in a cardboard box, kind of like a cereal box, and it seems to work really well.

I was told that they are in direct competition with copperheads. I think if you kept a copperhead or two close by, they will run the black snakes off. On the other hand, the reverse is also true....

My brother in law shot a 6 footer out of a tree in his back yard just last week. A 12 guage shotgun did the trick for him ... you might try applyiing sulfer to your lawn ... they don't EVEN like slithering on it.

Black snakes are neither poisonous nor aggressive. If you leave them alone they will leave you alone, and besides they eat a lot of mice.

They usually reside where they can eat birds. Removing the food source for the birds helps.
