Why was the movie Ishtar a flop?

I just watched it. Seemed pretty funny to me.

It was just famously bad. I remember when it came out, it was billed as some type of tribute to the old Hope/Crosby "Road To..." pictures, but basically they took two guys who were in their peak of serious drama movies and threw them into a comedy together, and it just never came together.

Now, I do know people who have seen it and liked it, and to each his own. But back when it first came out, it got piled on quicker than Dagwood's sandwich (how's that for an analogy?). All the critics totally panned it. Not to mention the premise just wasn't enough to sell it to anyone to go see it in the theatres. It just got to the point that the publicity on it was so terrible, it couldn't recover from it.

Sometimes that happens. Heaven's Gate is probably the most famous example, it couldn't last barely a weekend because it got ripped to shreds.

I saw Ishtar when it came out. I thought it was quirky and dumb but entertaining. Glad I saw it b4 I read critics' reviews.

I rented Kingdom of Heaven last week. It's an action movie with heart. Epic/period/war movies usually bore me but this one is worth the time. Critics were wrong about this one.

I actually paid money to see it in a theater. I thought it was funny. Not the greatest movie in the world or anything, but it was entertaining. Now, compared to awful movies like "Gigli" that have come out recently, it looks even better!

With powerhouses Warren Beaty and Dustin Hoffman on the bill and add to that a grand scale budget for location, this film just didn't earn nearly what it cost to make!

Plus, at the time, critics SLAUGHTERED it!
