Use a picture editing software such as:
A very good (and inexpensive) alternative is a free graphic editor called Irfanview, available for download at http://www.irfanview.com This is a fairly small file (821 KB) so it should download quickly even if you have a dial-up connection.
After you have downloaded it, double-click the file to start the installation. Once installed, this programme will allow you to reduce the size and dimensions of your graphic files and at the same time maintain an acceptable level of quality. Before making any of the following changes make a back-up copy of your original file.

If you have Microsoft Office, then "Photo Editor" or "Picture Manager" should already be installed. You can use this to do the resizing.
If you don't have that, then you need to download one. You can probably find one at www.download.com (CNET). Just search for JPEG and filter to show only the free licenses. I think I saw a top-rated free utility out there called PhotoPlus.
The problem that you're friends are complaining about has to do with the resolution (or size) of your photos. For example, a 4 megapixel camera set at the highest quality setting will capture images that are big enough to fill your desktop and more. You need to trim them down to an email friendly size. Just be sure to keep the original intact in case you want to have it developed for you later. The full resolution (original size) is important to getting high-quality prints or large photo sizes like 8x10..

You can go to www.download.com and download a photo editing program called "Irfan View" it's really easy to use and it comes in handy. Once you install it, to resize the image, you open the program and go to File, then open, and open up the picture you want to resize. Once that is done, you go to the top where it says "Image", 2 drop-down menus from "File" and scroll down until you see "Resize/resample". From there you go to where it says "Set new size". When I am resizing pictures, I use 500 x 333 pixels. So I would recommend doing that. But you can make it how ever big you want. To make it easier for you, if you just enter "500" in the first box, or which ever amount you'd like...the program does the other demension for you so it's equally balanced out so you only have to do one demension, "width". I hope that helps!

I have something called PhotoImpact.
With it I can change the size, the MB, the lighting, the color, I can cut out parts I don't like and adust them alone then paste them back in. There are so many things I can do with it it is amazing.
I know there are other such photo editing programs but I don't have any experience with them.
Hope that helps

Just open up the PAINT program (comes standard with all computers) & click FILE in the upper left corner & then on the drop down menu from FILE click OPEN then a thing will come up & you choose which picture it is that you want to resize & click OK. Then the picture will show up in the PAINT document & then go to the IMAGE tag3 (up by FILE) & then select the choice STRETCH/SKEW & just type in the size you want the picture to be.

Try this file to downsize the amount of memory used for pics. Go to http://www.download.com/ and download a copy of the software program IrfanView. IT'S FREE and you can use it to resize images so they can be emailed to your friends.

One way to do it, individually by image, is to open the image in a photo editor (for example, MS Picture Manger in Windows XP) and choose Resize and shrink the size of the file.
Alternatively, you can sign up for an account on Yahoo!'s Flickr service: http://www.flickr.com (in fact, if you have a Yahoo! account then you already have a Flickr account pretty much, the free version anyway). When you upload photos to Flickr, they resize them for you automatically.
