You poke a person letting the person know that you want to look at their profile before becoming their friend to read about them . see pictures . see their friends. but you dont have to be their friend to see it if you poke them. and if they poke you and accept you allow them to see your profile

It's just a way for one user to send nothing more than a signal to another. It does not include a message or anything, it's just the signal that the user thought of the other one.

It's just a fun way of getting attention and letting ppl know you are thinking about them.
