I spent a year in Los Angeles back in 1999 and was surprised that hardly anyone knew what I meant when I would say that.
Here in New York, as kids we used odds and evens. I always assumed it was universal but I was wrong.
What I want to know is, What state or city were you raised in, and did you use odds and evens growing up. I'm curious to see if this is an east coast thing.
By the way, the folks I met in Cali all said they used rock, paper, scissors.

Texas. People do both but rock, paper, scissors is more often used of the two. (Or flip a coin) I play foot, cockroach, nuclear bomb. Don't worry, nobody around here knows what I'm talking about either. Each has a hand symbol. Foot steps on cockroach but will get blown up by the bomb, cockroack survives nuclear bomb. It's just fun cuz it's different. :P

Here in VT we use rock paper scissors... though my co workers who are at least 13 years older than me had never heard of it. But as far as kids go that's what we use.

Ditto: Grew up in Jersey, 50's and 60's and we used odds and evens too. "Once , twice, three shhot." Brings back memories of stick ball and choosing sides etc.

Split my time between Plainfield NJ and Pittston PA. I always went with Odds in NJ and evens in PA.
