Is there any way I can operate my wife's 2001 Grand Am SE without the day time lights? Is there any way I can roll down the road with just my parking lights? I looked in the mannuel and could find nothing.

DRLs are manditory for all Canadian vehicles since 1990. DRLs use is optional in the US. DRL have their brightness reduced with either a large ceramic resistor or a PWM dimmer circuit. Your best bet is to examine the wiring diagram from the factory service manual, and identify which wire(s) go to the DRL resistor. Disconnecting the wiring to the DRL resistor usually permanently disables just the DRLs without effecting normal headlight operation or other warning lights (unlike disabling the DRL control module).

Not only it there no way to turn them off (other than disconnecting them) but it is also illegal. If they came on the car from the factory they have to be on when you are on the public roadway. I think they are rediculus myself. Thank the wusses in Canada for that unbelievably stupid idea. It takes more fuel to run them. And they claim to be so conservation minded. They rank right up there w/ the French as far as I'm concerned. The men should be wearing skirts.

Did you try turning the parking lights on?

This will usually cancel the DRLs.
