Plain black. Spans about half the size of an adult thumb. Can jump atleast 3 ft high. 2 front legs are longer. One day it jumped right past me but I ignored it.

Recent incident: I saw it on the basement stairs and it hid from the sound of my footstep. But then I stomped my foot and it seemed to have jumped in my direction, but it hit accidentally hit the stair wall that blocked the path between us. Not sure if it was trying to attack. I'm having a hard time figuring out its species. Identifying its name or species would help. thanks

Hi, well I doubt very much that it was intentionally trying to attack you, many jumping spiders (Salticidae) dont go down without a fight. Many of them will flail those thickened forelegs in an attempt to deter any would-be predators. Sometimes mock-charges are seen, it probably never would have touched you though. Mnay jumping spiders seem intimidating when they do this, but thats the idea, if it startled you, then mission successful. They have venom, but it is not at all dangerous to people. They also rarely bite, and most species are far to small to enen accomplish this task, so there is no danger at all. I will tell you though that as far as spiders fo, they are fantastic little predators, and will do a great job riding the basement of any other little critters, so this individual may be more of an ally than an enemy.

The species you have there is one of the larger individuals, I cant give you a species name, it may be in the genus Phidippus, but I will attach some photos of which species I believe it could be, and you can have a look at them for a positive I.D.

Hope this helps!

Brown Recluse spiders are VERY risky,in all probability greater so than a Black Widow. generally they're very small and located around and under timber. If in any respect conceivable get an exterminator. If no longer seal off the basement as thoroughly as conceivable after putting off a trojan horse bomb,2 if your basement is amazingly super (you certainly do no longer decide on them contained in the better element of your domicile!)

There is a good site called whats that bug. I read about jumping spiders on there and it said that they can be up to 3/4th of an inch or more in lenghth. There from the family Salticidae and they are very observant of movement and are very quick.

it's probably a wolf spider. they are totally harmless. the reason they jump is b/c they don't spin webs, they stalk their tiny prey. you are too big to eat, so they won't bother you. relax.

Don't worry about it, it's harmless. If it was a barking spider, though.... I would stay clear of it!! :)
