This September, I will be a Web Development student. I have a desktop at home, but I'm thinking.. do I need a laptop for school? Do college kids really need a laptop??? my desktop is perfectly fine.

I don't think it is necessary. I would certainly wait for a few weeks (if not months) into school to see if you feel like you're behind. But I wouldn't spend that kind of money _before_ you get a chance to see whether it's really necessary.

I was thinking of getting a laptop, but my computer whiz little brother did say that the one I had in mind was good, BUT that the problem with laptops is if part of it's fried, all of it's fried. There's no replacing just the monitor or just the hard drive--has to be the whole thing.
I think I would like the portability of it, but if you're perfectly adjusted to life with just a desktop, you might want to save your money. Then again, there will be a lot of demands with your program of study that might make having a portable unit worthwhile for you more than other college students.

Then take your desk top.
Laptop commercials show college students with laptops. Guess what? You don't really need a laptop. The desk top will be just fine.
All you need for class if a pen and some paper. The courses that need extra programs will be on school computers.
Trust me, don't spend the extra money. It's not worth it.

The only reason college kids buy laptops is b/c their smaller to lug to and from college (if they are resident students). If you're commuting and you can use the desktop @ home for your purposes then keep it. I long for the time when I can use a desktop again...

You may as well get one because more and more colleges and universities are requiring students to have them - and to take them to class. If you can hold off, your school might have some sort of discount deal worked out with one of the computer manufacturers.
