Here my answer:

Earth circumference appox = 8000pi or 25,132.741228718345 miles
earth day appox = 24 hour

Speed of earth rotation in Mile per hour = Earth circumference/ Earth day

or

25,132.741228718345/ 24 = 1,047.1975 mph

that how fast a fly must fly to keep the sun in the same postion on the earth and never leave daylight . By the way most flies fly at a top speed of 90 mph for a short time.

by the way most military jets can do it to. They go to Mach two or better. The Russians may have the Fastest jet , but I like the SR-70 Blackbird it went coast to coast in 2 hour 48 minutes and that hauling plane. But the Space Shuttle set the speed record because it can go around the earth every 90 minutes

Only one airliner could do it - Concorde. But it's no more.

Hey, it's not a difficult problem, is it? The Equator is about 24,000 miles around and the Earth revolves in 24 hours.

I think it must be grade 3 arithmetic to work out that you need to go just over 1000 mph.

Concorde could do 1400 mph, but our fastest airliners just about do 600 mph.

But then Concorde was an accident waiting to happen. I say that, even though I am British born and proud that we developed (with the French) the first and only supersonic airliner.

Concorde's takoff speed was nearly double a normal airliner, since its small wings needed for supersonic flight, needed lots more airspeed to get off the ground. This combined with the light frame that was required for such speeds, meant that the accident that grounded them was always bound to happen, and did happen on several occasions earlier.

The only difference with the last time was that when the object (piece of tire) was thrown up and burst the fuel tank, the fuel ignited and caused that horrific crash in Paris. It could easily have happened several times before, and even if that last time the escaping fuel had not caught fire, the scenario would have happened sooner or later.

fact is that technology was not ready for supersonic airliners. And this is a lesson for all those who think we should be shooting for Moon again, then Mars.

The Apollo missions to the moon were fantastic acheivements, but done on a safety shoestring. Apollo 13 only just survived, and sooner or later there would have been a great tragedy - no doubt about that.

We have not solved the problem of keeping astonauts safe for out of orbit flight (or even orbital flight, judging by the shuttle accidents). This fact has not entirely caught on with the dreamers who seem to equate space exploration with Columbus's discovery of America.

We have robotic explorers folks. They are cheap to send on missions, they feel no pain, and nobody mournes for the rest of their lives when they die.

1,000 miles per hour should put you in synchonous spot in the sun.

A few different ways I've figured this out.... The Earth at the equator has a circumference of about 24,000 miles. 24 hours in a day, means that the earth spins at about 1000 miles per hour.

Also, across this country, from east coast to west coast, it's about 3,000 miles. there are also 3 time zones with one hour differentialin each zone... again, 1000 miles per hour.

edit - So 47 miles is waaaaaaaayyy off? Thanks to other posters that proved my approximation. Just a note, Alaska, and Hawaii are not a part of the contiguous US. That is, they are not within the East and West coast. The Mountain Time zone disappears at daylight savings time IIRC.

At the equator the speed of earth is 465m/s toward East.

It is 1674 km/ hour, 1040.1754 miles per hour.

If we go with this speed in the direction of west, we will be stationary with respect to sun.
