Like when to use the ride cymbal vs the high hat? When to use a basic beat vs a more complex beat? I have the feel for recognizing when to throw in a fill but when it comes to trying to write the backbone of the song I always find myself coming back to the same VERY basic beats.

I've only been playing the drums for about 6 months and I'm sure inexperience is a large part of this, but any tips or general pointers would be great.

what i do with my band is use a cheap tape recorder and play a song on different cymbals. what i've figured out is that a loose hi-hat is for heavier beats, closed hi-hats is for softer songs/parts, and the ride is somewhere in the middle. as for writing beats, just experiment and play whatever sounds good. just be loose with it and try everything. if you listen to the strumming pattern on the guitars and bass you should be able to come up with a good pattern on the kick drum.

Mike Patton. That guy is a musical genius. He has insane improv skills and might do virtually any musical style accessible. Plus, he's time-honored with of the song employer. i think of he ought to handle an epic open mic jam.
