It's good exercise for us because we are relatively poor swimmers. For them it's effortless, and the blubber is necessary for insulation, and probably helps with buoyancy as well.

Whales fusiform shape; lack of hair , external pinnae (ears) and the reduction of the hind limbs mean they are extremley 'hydro-dynamic'. Swimming is much less energetically demanding (comparitevley for a whale) because it has blubber; whales are warm blooded mammals and must use energy to keep their bodies warm (water conducts heat away from the body alot more 'efficiently' than air). The blubber helps the whale to retain heat and therefore energy by acting like insulation from the cold water. There are of course physiological adaptations as well; counter-current heat exchange, retes etc.

Their fat is not like ours. It is blubber. It is there to keep them warm because they go into very cold water during migration before they get to the warmer water. With out that, they would freeze. It is genetically installed. Plus they eat alot. Some whales eat tons of food a day.

whales are well adapted to oceanic life.most of the whales are passive feeders and they are not predators.they dont need any special skills to chase and find its food like that of the shark.so it stays comfortable with its fat in which it stores energy.being fat doesn't bothers them.
