For example, Mr. Data is on the bridge yet he wears a yellow uniform. Shouldn't he be wearing a red uniform like the other bridge officers.

I don't remeber seeing "olive", but I know the other three (at least on TNG)...

Red(like Picard and Riker, etc):Command Division
Yellow(like Geordi and Worf):Security and Engineering Divisions
Blue(like Troi and Crusher):Science and Medical Devisions

hi. the colorations denote diverse departments interior the StarFleet infrastructure. Command (Captain, First Officer, Pilot, helmsman) positioned on gold in TOS - red in TNG Engineering, safe practices, Operations - positioned on red in TOS and gold in TNG medical, Sciences - positioned on blue in both sequence.

Im not up to par on my" Star Trek " ediquette but i think the old star trek it was Gold= Command; Blue=Medical/Science; Red=Tech/Engineering/Secuirty.

I think they changed the Red =Command; and Gold=Tech/Engineering/Security.

remeber Lt. Warf was head of Security Lt.Jordi Laforge Engineering. So i think Data was head of Tech, or Operations.

Blue is crewman
Yellow is Chief or Lieutenant Commander
Red is Commander or Captain
Olive is Admiral

It used to be segregated accorbing to department

Blue- Enginerring, technical, or medical
Yellow- Navigation
Red- Security, science, Communications
Olive- Command.
