My cousin in California had an addition built on her house and paid the contractor who was reckomended by a long time friend. He done poor work and does not return her calls to fix things that are not right. Who can she complain to to make him honor his contract? Or who can she file a complaint with? He hired different men every time he went there so there is no one else to call for poor work. The stucko on out side is cracking, windows painted shut, nail holes not filled, no insulation on roof vent, other things. Any help would be greatly appreacheated.

Advise your cousin to call an attorney. Many times a letter from a lawyer will get quick results. At the very least, it will start the ball rolling in what may eventually be a lawsuit.

Good luck with your cousins' situation.

There's absolutely nothing he can do. Did the guy even have a license? Probably some fool who works out of the back of his truck. Was he Mexican (since it's Cali). Then he probably took the money and is back home living like a king. If the guy did have a license, look him up with the better business bureau, file a complaint there, or your cousin may have to find this guy and take him to small claims court. Shy of finding him and shooting the guy, not much else he can do. Lesson is you pay for what you get. Your cousin should have researched more, asked for additional references and look at the guy's previous workmanship. If he does good work, his prior customers would be thoroughly happy and would be willing to show the work.

She will have to take him to court. She might be able to go through small claims. Tell her to get some estimates, take pictures, Have her friend say yes she hired him if there is no written contract. If she wins her case in small claims she can get court costs paid for. She shouldn't need a lawyer for this. Then she can have someone else repair his work.

If there is actual damages you could get a lawyer and take pictures of the things damaged and then take him to court and get your money back, and then get a new contractor.
