I am 25 years old and have had acne problems since I was about 12. I never got the little bumps....Noooooooo....I got the big huge cysts that are under the skin and very painful...the most severe acne there is. Proactiv is the ONLY product that has cleared me up. For the first time I can go to the gym or go swimming and not worry about people seeing me without makeup! I still get an occasional bump at my time of the month but the few I get are much less severe and disappear quickly. I would definitely recommend proactiv!!!! Also, I got an ad in the mail for half off. It is normally $40 and this one is $20 and it lasts longer than they say. Make sure to follow the directions (wash for at least 1 minute & always in the morning and at night followed by the other two steps) because I didn't at first and it didn't work as well. If you are old enough to order it, the phone number on this ad is 1-888-289-3200. They will rush order a supply to you in just a few days!
Btw, proactiv hasn't dried out my skin and I've been using it for two years now. I guess everyone is different. If it dries out your skin you can reduce your use of step 3 to once a day or every other day. I actually use step 3 only at night during the winter (when my skin gets the dryest) and use a moisturizer during the day and I didn't have any problems. This product has been a miracle for me so hopefully it'll help you too.

as with anything, some people will respond well some won't...just trial & error. if u don't want to try proactiv, here's another treatment.
keep in mind the problem with acne is that u get clogged pores (from dead skin cells, oil, dirt, etc) and sometimes a bacteria gets trapped there, starts dividing...causing an infected pore...so basically the pore could be just clogged or clogged & infected.
here's one method to get rid of the acne:
cleansing- make sure your hands are clean first (soap + water) (don't try to wash your hands and face at the same time). i wash my face twice a day...maybe u need to too. i like shiseido..not cheap but i think it's worth it. u absolutely need: facial soap, toner, facial moisturizer, a mask. wash ur face using a facial soap (it's mild) and the shiseido facial brush. pat dry with a clean towel. apply facial toner, then wait a couple minutes (to let ur skin absorb the toner), then apply a facial moisturizer. during the day avoid touching ur skin with ur hands. if u have an infected pore (red, swollen, painful...) apply a little benzoyl peroxide gel (johnson-johnson's persa-gel- cheap <$8, don't get shiseido acne treatment gel- it's salicylic acid which is not as good as benzoyl peroxide). if u ever squeeze ur pimples, which u shouldn't but if u can't help it, then make sure ur hands are clean, then dab a little isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on the pimple afterwards (to prevent infection) and don't ever squeeze so hard to tear into ur skin (because that will cause scarring)...use ur knuckles instead or ur fingernails. use a mask every few days. no need to use the facial scrubbing brush twice a day, just once in the evening/bedtime.
a little note on benzoyl peroxide- iit dries out the skin a lot, so use a little especially if u r putting it around ur nose. gel is best because it penetrates the deepest into ur skin. benzoyl peroxide is better than salicylic acid because it can kill bacteria (while salicylic acid cannot). the cleansing method above should give u improvement within 1-2 days, and will mainly work on preventing future ones. the benzoyl peroxide will work on getting rid of the acne u have now. also u need to really try doing it for at least 2 weeks to get an idea how well the regimen will ultimately work for u in the end. by the way, i saw the other comments about avoiding benzoyl...don't just avoid it, try it out first because it really does everything to try to counteract whatever is bugging ur pore. just start with 5% and apply a tiny amount directly onto the pimples only.
if u got the really bad acne- scarring, red, crater-like pimples then u need a prescription to adequately treat those (like accutane). accutane is not the most pleasant medicine, so try at least 3 other methods before asking ur doctor on that.

I was using proactive for a while, but it started to not work and really dried out my skin. Make sure that you look for something that doesn't contain Benzoly peroxide that is a major cause of dryness in my skin and it also takes all your essential oils that you need for your face off of it. The one thing I can recommend is to use Aveda's new product called outer peace acne relief. It's kinda on the expensive side, but one treatment lasts for about three months. I started using it about a month and a half ago and it cleared up all my pimples and reduced the number of blackheads that were on my face. When I had used proactive it had cleared it up for a time, but after about six months my skin started to break out again and then I tried the other stuff and it has been working. This stuff also won't dry out your skin because it doesn't contain all that harsh acid that other products carry. Hope that you find a solution. The only other thing I can recommend is that you don't touch your face with your hands and try to not rub your face to much as that can push the bacteria in even deeper into the skin and cause even more pimples.

I have used proactive, i had bad acne in highschool and it worked really well. however, it is expensive. You can get the same stuff (same medications and everything) at local drug stores. i switched from proactive to another brand after seeing the price difference. they are the same three part acne medication that uses mostly salicylic acid as it's active ingredient (and benzoyle peroxide or something for the toner), just a lot cheaper because they dont have to pay for celebrities on infomercials like proactive did. i have seen a few different brands, one was klear action and the other was proacne(i know its a horrible name, but its the same stuff). anyway, you should be able to find it in a drug store, if not by those names by another name. just look for a packaged product that has three separate bottles. the first being a face wash, the next being an oil reducing toner or something, and the last being a type of cream or lotion. i think proactive is something like $40-$50 for a package, while the stuff i found later was only $15-$20 which isn't bad for three separate bottles. it seemed to work for me, and good luck.

That's the thing about medicine. Nothing works for everyone. Proactiv seems to work very well for some people, and not at all for others. The Proactiv system uses a medication called benzoyl peroxide. You could also read the ingredient list on other OTC treatments to find a cheaper regimen with the same medication. If you try that one, and it doesn't work, use a skincare regimen with salicylic acid (again, just read the ingredient list to determine which medication a product uses). If neither of those work for you, see a dermatologist. He/she will prescribe you medication. You may have to try a few more before finding one that works, but when you do, it will be worth all the hassle. Good luck!

I've heard moderate reviews of proactiv and think is is expensive for the outcome. How bad is your acne? If you have severe acne, you need to get medication like acutane or a topical retinal cream.
If you have moderate acne, I suggest trying some tea tree oil. Walmart sells it rather inexpensively. You can use it straight to target zits or dilute it with distilled water and use it like an astringent. I'm sure you've already tried the benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid treatments that are over all the drug store shelves.
For a cleansing scrub, I swear by Avon's Clearskin® Invigorating Cleansing Scrub. The active ingredient BENZETHONIUM CHLORIDE is not found as commonly and that may be why it is more effective at killing bacteria. In addition, dead skins cells are sloughed off that might clog pores.

Proactiv is expensive and didn't even work for me. Each person has a different body chemistry and reacts differently to medications. Really, the only thing that kept my skin completely clear was pregnancy! But that's probably not an option for most people. Ha ha. What I use now is "Pore-fection" by AVON. It's pretty affordable and is really the only thing that makes a difference with my skin.
My advice would be to start with the cheaper drug store brands before spending all that money on Proactiv. You never know. $7 Neutrogena may be all you need.

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.
Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

You should go to your dermatologists to find out what works for you and what doesn't. Proactiv may work for some people however it may be too strong for your skin and cause an allergic reaction or it may not be strong enough. It all depends on your skin. But I can tell you one thing for sureif you want clearer skin wash your face every night with a facial cleanser ( I recommend Clearasil) NO SOAP and avoid greasy food and soda. Eat more fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water. On top of all this go to your dermatologist andsee if there is some cream or something they recommend. You can't just take care of your skin on the outside you have to take care of it on the inside by eating it too. So even if your dermatologists gives you something that works keep doing all those others things if youwant healthy and clear skin that lasts.

I just recently canceled my membership with Proactive because it left my skin really oily in the T-zone area (thats the area to your forehead and your nose) and it wasnt working at all for me. When i called i asked if i can have the membership revoked and they kept asking questions like " are you sure?" "Why?" And then they said well would you like to try our 7% benzoyl peroxide? I was like wait you have a better product and you arnt offering it to your customers? Dont you think that a big company like that will offer a better product then at the last minute? What i am using now and it works so good i swear this stuff is like 10 times better than proactiv. I got a sample of this stuff from clinique and the first day i used it i seen a dramatic change. it seemed like all of my impurities just dissappered. It left my skin so soft and not oily like Proactive and it didnt dry it out. The lotiopn from proactic is really watery but the one from Clinque is really whipped or really thick but not a bad thick. The makeup you use also makes a BIG diffrence. I use the makeup from clinque and they told me they test it on 10 people and if anyone of those people breaks out with the product they send it right back. It is fragrance free and oil free. The makeup is so pretty to. Well anyways good luck. I say Clinque all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
