There are "T" squares used for cutting drywall and a regular "L" shaped square. You can purchase either at HomeDepot or other home building supply places.

It could be the "square" tool used to get correct angles for framing and trim, ect.
Square refers to getting the opposite corners, of lets say the framing portion during building construction, the same measurement, so that the roof, drywall, ect will fit correctly, meaning that the edge of the drywall will butt flat against the corner if it is square, and not have a gap between the edge of the drywall and the corner at the bottom or top
Or it's a term in roofing. A square is 100 sq ft, or 10' x 10', 3 bundles of shingles equals 1 square

It all depends on what you are actually asking...
SQUARE is:
- A 90 degrees angle - buildings are dependent upon this. Things (walls, windows, doors, floors, etc) all need to be plumb, level and square.
- A measurement of area - could be square feet, square inches, square yards. Imagine, for example, if a measurement is in square feet... that one square foot is a square that is 12 inches by 12 inches. The square feet of a room is the amount of 12 inch squares that can fit in the two dimentional space of that room.
That's all that I can think of as far as SQUARE in home building.

A square in home building is a measurement of 10' x 10' or 100 square feet total.
For example if you was roofing your house, you would figure the size by taking the length of the roof and then the width of the house (eave or gutter side to the peak of the roof). This dimension would then be divided by 100 to give you the total squares of shingles you would need for one side, if you double this it would give you the total needed for both sides or the total roof, this example is for a simple rectangular home. The same applies for wall dimensions and the total number of 'squares' needed for siding or paint or what ever. As a bonus, it takes three packaged bundles of shingles like you would purchase at a home center to cover one square or 100 square feet.
Hope this helps.

Well, it's been quite a while since I had industrial arts in school..but I'll give it a shot. If remember correctly, it's a metal instrument that looks similar to a ruler, but is at a 90degree angle, to measure that angles are straight or "square"...there is also a "t square" I believe, that is a metal ruler type instrument that is shaped like a T for the same reason.

A square is a tool with two surfaces at a right angle with
each other and measure marks on each surface.
It is used for measuring and making right angles in drawings
and making sure that things are perpendicular.
They are usually made out of metal which won't deform
easily so that the right angle remains true.
