God bless them for driving slow, I wouldn't want an old guy speeding. When you get older everything slows, your reaction time especially, plus maybe a bit hearing loss. This doesn't mean that one has to take the license away, you don't want to rob them of their Independence. After the age of 80 they have to take a yearly exam to make sure they still have a decent response to certain things on the highway and their eye sight is ok.
After reading the other answers, I am ashamed of you--you'll be getting there someday, maybe you should be more respectful, there's a lot you can learn from your elders.
Besides one day you will be the old fart.

I think that people drive whatever speed they did when they were first driving. People will probably think we are slow in the future only going 70 miles an hour.

everyone gets aggravated when they find out that they are behind an old person driving...the expletives...although no one can hear them but you...come spewing out of your mouth...we've all been there...but...I think the reason that old people are so slow is that at about the age of thirty your reflexes start to slow down..you don't react as quickly as you used to...for any moms that play video games with their kids-you know what I'm talking about...so...I think maybe they drive slow so that they don't make any mistakes...also things like arthritis and such slow them down too...but don't get too mad at them...that will be us some day...

There are two main reasons for this.
1. Their bodies are deteriorating. They are losing their reflexes and senses. They can't see and react to things the way younger people can. They're becoming senile. To compensate for this, they drive slower.
2. They are more experienced and understand that driving too fast will undoubtedly lead to a crash or a collision. Younger drivers are immature and don't understand the risk they are taking when they drive.

Because everything is slowing down for them, including driving, and they realize that driving fast doesn't save much time. They like to stall around and laugh to themselves about those driving like they are trying to beat the speed of light.

LOL.
I don't know the answer to that question but I do know that whenever I'm late for work there is some law that states I will get stuck behind an old person going at least 15 miles UNDER the speed limit---every single time!!

because they cant see cant hear cant reach the pedals etc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,plus they aren't really in a hurry to get anywhere
I know that the older you get the slower your reflexes get. Maybe they are a little scared, nervous......I don't know. Most are retired and are just plain not in a hurry. If you want to see some crazy driving go to Florida.....they go like 90 miles an hour.......its some pretty scary stuff........all you see is the little grey bun peeking over the steering wheel as they blow past you.....

Over-caution! Out of a desire to compensate for slower reaction times in the event of an imminent collision, many older people are overly cautious to the point of impeding traffic and risking more collisions due to road rage and simply being out of sequence with everybody else.

Everyone slows down with age. Have patience and respect them. They were once young and wild too.
Whenever I get behind one I sing, " Blue hairs driving in my lane." sung to the Willie Nelson song Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.

It's they're way of getting revenge for the younger generation as they think we are living our lives wrong and things should be back the old way how they grew up. So generally they do it just to annoy the sh*t out of us, and the can get away with it because the are old and geriatric so they can get away with it. And because they are deaf they can't hear everyone else abusing them to get off the road.
well that's my theory anyway.
