As a African American I don't support any party. And I have notice a shift in many young blacks like my self being indepent, or unaffiliated. Neither party cares about the african american community. But speaking realisticlly the dem. and rep. run everything and independents can rarely be elected. So why are we putting all are eggs in one basket. Like Tavis Smiley says, "Its not about the party, It's about the people." Lets wake up.

Because the republican party has done anything and everything it can to suppress the African American ppl.

It is the democratic party that has been fighting for minority rights since the 60s. Things like affirmative action and the voting rights act.

Also keep in mind that it was the republican party that decided to pick the fight with African Americans. The republican party used propagands to paint a black face of lazy black ppl who wanted to live off of welfare. (which is not true) They did this in order to demonize the democratic party.

I am saying you didnt pick the fight. They put it on you for political gain.

The republican party figured out that motivating hate was the most powerful force to get ppl to vote. And what motivates hate more than prejudices. They figured out that especially white southern males are very black prejudiced and if they could get them to think that blacks wanted to take their jobs or live off them on welfare, that prejudice would blind them to anything else they did.

PS Don't fall for propaganda. The democratic party is the party that will fight for ALL minority and civil rights. I watch Tavis Smiley every night and I highly doubt he meant to abandon the democratic party.

Well, first lets start with the fact you are AMERICAN. Unless you or your mom and dad moved here from Africa, you are only an American. Otherwise, people who are white that move to America from Africa should get the same privileges granted to black Americans.

As several people have mentioned, the democratic party has generally been on the "side" of the black community. Of course, what has that gotten the black community? Inner cities, fatherless homes, majority of the jail population, lack of proper education (of course this is now affecting most communities).

Multiculturalism has replaced the equal rights movement. Multiculturalism sounds nice on paper. But when it is actually put in motion, it does exactly what it sets out to destroy (differences). How exactly does looking at each individual group in America and then treating them as individual groups (this is racial profiling, something the dems scream about being unfair) bring us all together? Hence, you calling yourself African American. But, this doesn't only affect the black community. It affects all communities.

People, in general, want to believe in what sounds nice or like playing fair, even if it doesn't work. So, what you are missing is that it is not only the black community the dems are using to further their socialist agenda. They will use any group (homosexuals come to mind) to further destroy what has made America great and set us apart as a country. If you don't believe this last statement. Ask yourself, what other country are so many people literally dieing to get in for a chance at freedom and success?

By the way, the majority of dems voted down the equal rights bill.

Blacks support the Democrats because they think it is in their best interests to do so. That's it. It may be that they don't believe that either party will work in their interests but feel that the Democrats are the lesser of two evils. We have a lousy political system. Neither the Dems or the Reps represent the majority of Americans who are thereby disenfranchised. Unless other parties come forward which are not as corrupt and will represent the people we could have this problem for a long time.

I think blacks support the Democratic Party because they have been told that Republicans don't care about blacks and don't like them by the Democrats. The blacks then don't see anywhere for them to go and they are told by the Democrats "We care about you, we love you, we will make things better for you." Then they get the votes and again do not deliver because they need the blacks to need them. Look again at the Republicans. The blacks agree with them on more moral values and look at the positions blacks have been given (TWO Secretaries of State!). I see a lot of talk from the Democrats but more action from the Republicans. I am also an Independent though, because neither party has enough right. I admire your thinking and questioning because you are right - the Democrats are just giving lip service and they need the black people to stay needy so they can keep giving them empty promises in exchange for votes.

At one point in time, the democratic party seemed to speak more the black community than the republican party. Things are different now. Most of the voters in the black community are older and old habits die hard...and people tend to lean the same way politically as their parents/community (not always).

I think that although the democratic party means well, they are actually making things harder for folks of any race. Too many special programs based on race or socio-economic status is enabling the poor and middle class and I don't think that Democrats (or liberals) understand that this is keeping folks down.

I would imagine that more and more young black people will be moving away from the democratic party. They are starting to realize that social programs specifically made for them are insulting and are making the assumption that black people can't make a way for themselves. I don't know if this means the younger black community will start moving over to the republican side...they will probably go more independent (as is the trend among most young people now) and vote on the candidate, not the party.

The Civil Rights Movement would have been greatly delayed in the 50's and 60's, had the Democratic Party not supported equality for all, especially Black ppl. Many of the Republican philosophies care about protecting their own assets over and above making life opportunities available to all. A Black Republican is kind of like being a Jewish Nazi. Same with other minorities.

The civil rights movement. I agree that everyone has a free choice and I always split my ticket. You will hear people say "I'm a 60's Democrat" and that is true for some of us who grew up during that time. It was a time of turmoil but also a time of change. There were many good and bad people on both sides of the fence then as there is now. That is why I vote for the candidate and not the party.

Good question. I would have to say because they are "leaders' like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who are liberals.

Democrats seem to have the edge for some odd reason. Eventhough Kennedy (President Kennedy) had secret service men following around Dr. King during the civil rights movement.

Make an informed decison. I'd reccomend looking into JC Watts. He's a Republican African American. He was accused of "acting like a white person".

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. The Dems. offer short term programs that keep you right were you are. The Repubs. try to motivate you to better yourself. If you scan over most of the comments above you will see that Dems.=poor, Repubs.=rich. You should work to better yourself, then tell the Dems. to keep their hands off of the money you earned.*** I use to vote for whoever seemed to be the best candidate, but I have learned that if your choice is not in the majority party, they will never get anything passed. Your vote will be wasted.***

First of all, Tavis Smiley has never voted for a Republican. Secondly, AA's support the donks because they supported the civil rights movement in the 60s. (Ironically, in the 1860s AA's support the 'phants because they were the party of Lincoln. The donks ran candidates with slogans like "America: A white country for whites," that's a paraphrase, but not by much.)

Once AA's picked the donks, it was hard to switch, because the 'phants started to appeal to southern racist whites (also known as "Christians"), who were formerly big donk supporters. This led many AA's to dislike the 'phants, and even if they weren't satisfied with sweet donkey love, they had no place to go.

So vote for 'phants if you want. But keep in mind, you're voting for the same candidates that white racists are. Enjoy.

The real problem is too many people still see a black community and not just a community. Politicians should have the ideals of ALL Americans on the agenda and not play favorites with races. This stereotyping is the fault of both whites and blacks who see a skin color and do not realize we all have the same color when we bleed, red.
