I was watching something on tv about polygamy and it just astounds me that they get away with so much. They should be prosecuted for all the sexual abuse they are involved in. I know not all are like that, but there are alot of children being harmed and nothing is being done to help them. The fathers and husbands hide behind their mask of religion.

You think all those young girls that are raped by their fathers, brothers, uncles are willing particpants? They are not. I can assure you of that. It is people like you that need to be locked up and kept away from children.

Also to add, there hasn't been any cases of polygamy prosecuted since the 1950's. They only go after the sexual abuse if they can.

Yes, polygamy and sexual abuse are illegal, but how many cases are actually prosecuted. The women are too stupid to leave their husbands. They just turn a blind eye to what's going on. There are lots of polygamists around, but do you think the government is actually going to arrest them all, no! It's illegal but they still accept it. These plural marriages are cult like. They scares the girls into not talking. They beat them and rape them. People are just pretending this problem doesn't exist.

I'm not saying that child abuse and polygamy go hand in hand. I could care less if polygamy was legal or not. But the fact is people are ignoring the fact that young girls are being raped by their own blood and forced into marriages, sometimes with their own family members. It is happening now, all over. People seem to be missing the point that molestation is going on polygamist families. That's my problem with polygamy and the fact that people just ignore it.

wow I really didn't realize how ignorant so many people are about polygamy in the US.
There have been several documentaries about this problem in recent years. In Utah especially it is a huge problem but no one prosecutes because there are so many of them and it is often hard to prove. The men marry several different women who each live in separate homes or trailers. Because the women are not legally married they then collect welfare checks for the children who are illegitimate by law, but who belong to the father according to their religion. Men, usually the father, decide who their daughters marry, usually when they are very young, usually still teenagers, the girls do not typically get to choose anything and have often already been raped by the father who tells them it is to teach them to please a future husband. In some cases the girl is married to an uncle or cousin against her will. They are taught from birth that this is right and that they should not fight against it or they are going against God. Funny how many people complain about how many black people are on welfare when there are entire towns in Utah supported solely by welfare and nothing is said.

Personally, I don't think there is a reason why polygamy should be illegal if all people within the marriage did so willingly. Sexual abuse of partners or children does not have to have any direct association to people having a polygamist relationship....even from what you said the abuse is apparently religion based and not the result of the marital arrangement.
It surprises me that they could use religion as a cover to freely abuse children...freedom of religion stops (or should stop) at the point when it begins to harm others. I hope the show you watched was actually covering older cases and isn't something that occurs anymore.

I saw that show. It's difficult to prosecute because the victims can't come forward. I don't think polygamy is wrong, but the children should not be forced into a "marriage" just to legitimize someone's power trip.
Polygamy could also be a mixed group. It doesn't have to be one man with a bunch of wives. What would you call 3 men and 2 women?

You can't equate polygamy to child abuse. Polygamy is a characteristic of some cultures which, as long as everybody agrees, it's okay, whereas child abuse is just disgusting, because you cannot NOT hurt the victims.

a huge gap that is between polygamy and children abuse. According to the WHO children abuse falls in well defined categories. and it's punishable through law. no society approves those categories whatsoever.

However, about polygamy. scietifically human beings are polygamous. we are higher animals, and we have that in our genes. it's inevitable. some cultures found that it's very useful for them to allow legal polygamy to reduce the rates of adultry and sons from fornication. to maintain a solid family structure, as those societies are rather family oriented. I'm fully aware that many of you might not agree with their standards. but yet again, who are we to judge according to our own standards? they are only that good for us. they are not universal. so bottom line, child abuse should be strictly faced and punished. polygamy is a totally different issue. it should be organized and discouraged though. my personal opinion.

Polygamy is Illegal! As is sexual abuse of children. I don't know what you were watching but you may want to rewind and watch it again. In the US, Polygamy is only allowed(very restricted) in one SMALL section of Utah. Sex with children isn't allowed anywhere.
addition to your update: I can think of 2 cases that were in the 1980s (i believe). But they weren't religion based. Just 2 seperate men who couldn't make a decision.

I think the better question is why do women marry polygamists.
Men wouldn't be polygamists if they knew women didn't go for that crap. That is what I disrespect about women......how like 5 or 10 of them all hover to one guy...no self-esteem.
