I had a dream someone tried to kill me with this stuff called anti-freeze. I have never heard of it until today, not a car savy person. Anyhow, I googled it and found only that it is a chemical used in cars. I want to know more, what is it used for, where is it purchased, and can it really be fatal? In my dream this scary man made me swallow it......creepy that I never heard of it, but I dreamed about it and it is a real substance. Info. Please....thanx so much!

If that's what you dream about - dread to think what you fantasise about !

Antifreeze does just that - it stops your water freezing up in your engine - because when water freezes it can exert enough pressure on your engine block that it can crack it and ruin your engine - it also acts as a coolant when it's warm, but I had this conversation with an RAC man (UK breakdown service) recently and he told me it's primary purpose other than stopping the water freezing, is to prevent corrosion of your engine which the water without it will do to your engine and again over time ruining it - basically stopping it rusting inside !

Sweet Dreams !

its an alcohol used to stop the water freezing in the engine (also called coolant) leading to some serious damage if not kept at a high enough level in very cold weather. keep it topped up to around minus 30-40, at 0 degree temperatures will drop dramatically when you start driving till the engine is warm enough to open the thermostat. yes u can die from it. if injected or serious amounts drank. but however there is a chemical in it to make u sick. which was put in because the homeless used to drain it to get hammered without costing them a penny, but the poor owner a fortune it tastes very very sweet. don't drink it.

Yes antifreeze has been known to kill people and animals. I remember growing up, I had a neighbor put just a few ounces in a bowl to lure the stray cats(sweet smell) and we would find them dead a few days later. Also, in GA just this past year, a lady was tried and convicted for killing her husband with antifreeze.

Anti freeze/coolant: ethylene glycol, is used in vehicle cooling systems to prevent freezing in winter and boil-over in summer. It is very nasty and I suppose it would kill you if you managed to get enough down without puking.
FYI: some French wineries were caught adding automotive antifreeze to their wine a few years back in order to speed-up the grape fermentation. (true story).

google ethyline glycol, it will kill but over time, you couldnt stomach it in large doses, and yes it is sweet and dogs and cats love it. the green stuff is the best when it comes to killing. but if you have never heard of anit freeze until today you should be paying attention in school more often

Yes, anti-freeze or de-icer, is extremely toxic to the Human body, thanks to my Environmental Biology course. It has been proven. In fact, a few months ago, the news was that a person drank some and died! It is used to defrost the car during frosty times such as snow/ice on car windows, and may be used industrially, too.

PS Ignore the guy who said only toxic in a gallon - I'm sure it would kill in relatively small amounts (however not in microscopic levels via breathing it in)!

Additional Reference:

Laboratory studies were undertaken to assess the toxicity of industrial mixtures of aviation de-icers and anti-icers. Various additives and contaminants are present in these solutions at proportions of 10 to 20% of the total volume. Static-renewal toxicity tests were performed at concentrations that bracketed published LC50 values for the primary ingredients (9--51 ml glycol/L) using fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and Photobacterium phosphoreum (Microtox{reg_sign}) bioassays. Water from a stream that receives runoff from a large commercial airport was also tested during a late winter storm (March), and spring baseflow (April). The anti-icer solution was more toxic than the de-icer solution by two orders of magnitude (96-h LC50 range 0.03-0.44 ml/L, 3.02--13.48 ml/L, respectively). Both types of solutions exhibited greater toxicity than previously reported values for the primary ingredients. Toxic effects were observed in the March stream sample, but not the April sample. Significant inhibition of reproduction in C. dubia in the anti-icer and de-icer solutions occurred at 0.05 and 0.38 ml/L, respectively. Effects were observed in the Microtox assay at concentrations of 0.125 and 0.25 ml/L for the anti-icer and de-icer, respectively. Results suggest that the additives, rather than the glycols, are the major source of toxicity. Histological damage observed in fathead minnows primarily involved gill, kidney, and skin tissue, with the most prominent responses seen in fish exposed to the anti-icer solution. The de-icer solution elicited respiratory epithelial``disruption`` and renal damage, and the anti-icer caused proliferative branchitis (hyperplastic response) and delamination of the epidermis from the dermis of the skin.

although antifreeze is used in cars, it is used worldwide by ninjas as a dangerous additive to coffee. It tastes sweet so we like it's taste, but the side effects suck. First of all, a wierd taste in your mouth, then aheadache followed by chronic falling down disorder. oh yeah, and then you die, and i'm sure it would be an unflattering death, diarrhea, screaming, vomit.... yeah, so basically, avoid the bright green creamer at starbucks.
stupid ninjas anyway
