Atticus assumed that he could intimidate Bob Ewell by cross-examining him in the courtroom.
Re-read the part about the trial; it's all in there.
It's the best book ever!

Atticus thinks that Bob Ewell showed up his apprentice by running out of town instead of competing in a rodeo like he promised. So he wanted to basically shoot Bob and save Mae Belle. Bob and Atticus's apprentice Maple were supposed to have a showdown at the rodeo, with the winner taking Mae Belle to this big hoedown thing, the Pomtown Rip-rig. But really Mae Belle really got kidnapped by Maple and Bob Ewell was going after her to save her.
