For myself, I automatically notice how they speak if its in person. The words they choose and the proper way in which they use them not to mention their ability to maintain a vocabulary of words that have more than 5 letters in them. If in writing its pretty much the same thing only spelling and punctuation are also taken into consideration.

Woah.
I don't know about other people, but I've noticed that for me it's how they use the information they have- but even then, sometimes trauma or faulty self-concepts keep them from using what they could. Smart seems to be applying what we know in good ways. But sometimes intelligent and otherwise smart people use faulty knowledge to apply what they "know" in sabotaging ways- is that smart?
I used to have a friend who was wicked smart- and she doesn't know it, even now Too little support and encouragement. Too much preoccupation from her childhood and adult life choices that resulted in more trauma and abuse. Destroyed esteem that she doesn't know she can recover in real ways. so she makes really stupid choices a lot of the time- choices that hurt her MORE and perpetuate the denial and abuse cycles. Is that smart? She is VERY intelligent though!!!!!
I think Einstein said it pretty good,
"Intelligence is relative"
Maybe Forest Gump's mom said it better though, eh?
-"stupid-is-as-stupid-does"
I think the same goes for smart.
I've seen really ignorant people go visit 3rd world countries and have a significant emotional (life-altering) event and they come back totally changed and far smarter. Using their intelligence for greater wisdom.
So I don't decide too quickly.
Narrow mindedness or fixed thinking sure narrows down the possibilities of being able to apply what we learn and know in wise or useful ways though- so joining a cult with circular logic isn’t a really smart thing to do...but getting OUT after getting in sure is a REALLY smart thing to do, and incredibly COURAGEOUS too!!!!!
'Course then the person has to dump the insidious logic taught to one, which means applying more smarts to it... that might be the hard part, and require more than being smart.
Interesting word, "smart"...

Confidence. If they say something someone else doesn't understand, and say it with confidence, but not OVER confidence, the person is like, wow. They know what they're talking about and it comes so easily to them. They must be a smart person. And this is how people who are full of--themselves--get all the stupid people to follow them and then overwhelm the people with real answers by sheer number.

The way they speak, spell, act, and eat .
The way you dress does not make you smart ,the way you look ,such as wearing glasses does not make you smart .
Common sense is worth a lot more at times then really being smart .

Intelligence is a very difficult thing to put a finger on objectively,
but it is really quick and easy to identify those who relate to others well. this may be an aspect of Intelligence. See Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence

Without a doubt - your vocabulary. Speak with big, intelligent words, ( using them correctly in a sentence, of course : ) and one comes off as being well-read, educated, and smart.

I think smart is synonymous with 'interesting'.
The worst in a human being is being a bore.

I guess you judge people on their seeming ability to carry on intelligent conversations or their ability to draw logical conclusions.
