I have been married onc before but we basically fell apart very quickly. He moved to NY and then for 3 years we were married but seeing other people. Finally, he was willing to give me a divorce and his current(at the time) girlfriend brought the divorce papers to me to sign after he mailed them to me from NY and his lawyer drew up the papers. But because of a very personal situation I had to move immediately. I have not heard from him in 3 yrs. I am getting ready to get married to the love of my life. But I do not have the paper in my hand. my fiance is a marine and I do not want to get married to him and it be illegal in any way at all. and then he getin some type of trouble. Much less myself. I know it has been done I just do not have any proof of it at all. I never changed my name or even reported it at all. Never!!! I knew it was a mistake and didnt want to further it at all. HELP!!!!!!!!!! What can I do? I am trying to track down the man but he might be in India.

Normally the courthouse where you get your licence only askes you if you had, and when and where the divorce took place.

But all you have to do is contact the court that did the divorce and get a copy of the decree if you have to have it.

I'm a lawyer--Just call the courthouse of the jurisdiction in which your divorce was filed (NY?). The clerk will have copies available for you.
