In New York State in particular. I hear all these people saying that it's both illegal to keep or kill a (native) praying mantis. Now, I don't know why anyone would want to KILL one, but my daughter and I just CAUGHT one and we are keeping it as a pet. Really cool to watch the way it stalked a cricket (I have lots of reps that I feed cricks to). Thing is, my kid is so darn HONEST that she feels if we are breaking the law we ought to let it go. We probably will anyway and I'll buy an exotic at the next rep expo (hopefully they'll be one on Long Island in '07). I always did wonder though about that tale of illegality for keeping or killing.

You ask if it would be happy??? You take it out of it's environment and place it in solitary confinement with plastic make believe plants and you think it will be happy? You would be better off with a pet rock. Then you can put it anywhere you like and it won't run away or go crazy with grief.

u should keep it, it isn't illegal till u get cought lol, well but i think it is best to live in the wild so it can find a mate and if u let it out after 2 weeks i don't think that is the best thing because they are so dependent on u to feed it

As a general rule, anything native in your area will be illegal to keep as a pet, and may even pose some hefty fines.

Check with your fish and wildlife department, they will be able to tell you. Or contact a local herp club and ask them ;)

I don't think they will do a sweep or raid on your house for keeping a bug! If you want it get it, but how will you care for it? Best bet is to let it be outside where it belongs, not in a jar! Are you really serious?

This question is frequently brought up, and the answer is NO. Here is a web site to read more about it:

well, yes because they are endangered, but they arent gunna catch you with a bug! Tell your daughter that you are probably saving it from being eaten by a bird, which you are, and juat tell her not to tell anyone.

I think you should let it go. Don't risk it.
