Look at the lyrics to "Born to Run."
Most great rock songs (though I don't know what kind of songwriter you are) are about cars, girls and youthful longings. Bob Dylan and John Lennon changed that for a while (and that's great too), but that basic formula, set to three-chord rock and roll, is still unbeatable.

To write a song the following things need to be considered.
Whom is the song for and whom will it be sung by?
What type of genre will the song be and what genre is the singer best at?
Will the theme of the song correspond with the rest of the album(given you are making an album)? Do you want it to?
What type of song will it be? Upbeat? Encouraging? Love?etc.
Then take ideas from various situations.

If you don't have anything to say, say nothing.
(Please don't follow the advice of those who are giving you topics that have been done to death. What the world needs now is NOT another love song, song of teen angst, etc.)
Is there anything that you care about? If so, figure out what you have to say about it, and say it. Is there something that you think, a way of looking at things, that other people don't? Write that.
You could write about having nothing to write about.
What I really think, though, is, give it a rest.
If you ever have something to say, you won't have to ask a bunch of strangers.

i have a lot of song topics:
1. write about the person you love- why you fell for the person, how that person made you feel, and how you wished that the person knew or if the person did know, sing how much you love that person...when it comes to love and when it comes to your heart, the song will always be GREAT
2. sing a song of praise: like, your religion, you getting a job, you getting an A- anything of praise!
3. sing a song of sadness: let your emotions out and describe how you feel...i love songs that have their inner emotions...
in the end, sing a song that comes from your heart and everything you feel...make sure it goes and i'd be sure to love it...

with the aid of all ability write lyrics approximately stuff which you relate to, yet once you like human beings to hearken to on your songs extra desirable than as quickly as the song must be good. unquestionably everyone has primary songs that rock yet have rubbish lyrics, yet fewer human beings like lyrically outstanding songs the place the song would not dangle together. by using fact you're in a band you need to in simple terms play together as many times as achieveable and in simple terms try a lot of distinctive ideas. Bouncing riffs and notes off one yet another would be relaxing and ought to yield some good ideas with the aid of twist of destiny. you need to checklist your rehearsals and the hear to them to distill out the stuff that works. once you have have been given the song systems coming together then your vocalist can commence putting the words on them. in case you do not have lyrics then in simple terms sing the 1st factor that comes into your head - you may continuously edit the words later. this methodology has labored for me and others - like Paul McCartney and so on.

I write about all sorts of things... ranging from daily regular life to crazy short-stories (in song form) about ghosts, alien abductions, religion, collective universal consciousness, the other side, and summing it all up with things like paradise (on earth), and eternal being and life. You an literally write about anything - what will you write about?

Yes, "Chemin des colombettes" (road of the little doves). Yesterday , I sent a paper to the WIPO (WORLD INTELECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION) In Switzerland. that is the name of the street. I imagined a beautiful country road with doves. Maybe the city already invaded the home of des petites colombettes., but the thought was nice.

Write about something in your life at the moment. Are you content and happy with your life? Write a song about being happy and content. Are you upset with something? Wrtie a song about upset.
It is hard to write about something and really mean it unless you have experienced it.
